National Cycle Network forges across Mabley Green
The new alternative alignment of National Cycle Network route 1 via Mabley Green, on which Sarah Parry Jones of Sustrans London consulted us a couple of years ago, is now becoming a reality, with construction in progress as of June 2004 and an opening celebration planned for September 2004. The path links the Red Path and Homerton Road, forming a key segment of the route between Victoria Park and Hackney Marshes. It will be promoted as a walking and cycling route to school for Daubeney, Kingsmead and Hackney Wick primary schools and Cardinal Pole secondary school, with signs at the schools and at each end of the route to encourage its use. Sustrans is hoping to get funding to enable the contractor to stay on site and build a second pathway to link the canal. (For a map see the aforementioned consultation page or use this Streetmap location). Check it out next time you're cycling out that way. Maybe you'll carry on and end up in Essex or, hey, why not Holland via Harwich? December 2004: Mabley Green path is now complete! |
